About us
ECHO Mobile Library was founded in 2016 to provide library services to people living in refugee camps across Greece. From emergency response, camps transformed into a permanent feature of the Greek asylum system, often described by residents as prison-like and with substandard living conditions. Approximately 7,000 people live in the camps around Athens visited by our library.
With very few structures in place for supporting people while they endure the asylum process, the library’s purpose was and remains to offer books, creative ways of spending time, respite and study opportunities to those residing in the refugee camps that we can reach. In doing so, we foster autonomy and resilience while creating a connection between isolated camps and the city.
As a multilingual library we see the right to read in mother-tongue languages is a means of supporting mental health, offering moments of respite from camp conditions, and retaining connection with people’s cultural heritage.
We support the right to long-term education by providing opportunities for studying. We also provide a safe and inclusive community space for people to explore our books, make friends, play music and interact in ways that are not possible inside the camps. We adapt the library to the needs of our users, their ages, background and interests. We support people to access services and build human connections through creative and educational activities.
