About us

The Mind and Soul choir’s aim is to transform lives through singing. (www.mindandsoulchoir.org ). Our objective is to promote mental wellbeing through singing and reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness. The choir was founded in 2006 funded through an initial grant from the Maudsley Charity. The group currently has between 20 and 40 members. It is based in Southwark. What makes the group unique is that the singers rehearse every Wednesday from 6 to 7pm at the Maudsley Hospital itself in the heart of Southwark, one of the UK’s leading mental health hospitals. (www.slam.nhs.uk ). The choir is non-auditioned, free and open to staff, service users, friends, carers, family, and members of the local community. The choir is made up of members from the local area of Southwark. We have regular participants who are currently residential on the wards. Throughout the year we have an additional ongoing project where the musical director and some choir volunteers take music directly onto the wards to reach those with the most severe mental health issues who cannot physically attend the choir.
