About us
The idea for our project began to germinate during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when social isolation and poor psychological health were on the rise, and many support services struggled to keep up with demand. In 2021, after extensive consultation, we elected trustees and began working towards our goal of creating a socially responsible, not-for-profit organisation that would bring people together, address local needs and help safeguard aspects of our maritime heritage. We became a registered charity in 2023.
Our work centres on a remarkable local fleet: the Menai Strait One Design. Designed by a local naval architect and built at Gallows Point between 1937 and 1952, these 17 boats still exist, live locally and are believed to be the oldest complete fleet of One Design yachts in the world. Activities focus on preserving, renovating and sailing this unique heritage fleet, while sharing its story with the community.
At our grassroots charity, we bring people together through the transformative power of sailing. Working closely with local individuals, groups and organisations, we offer a free sailing programme designed to enhance health, wellbeing and confidence. Our boats are crewed by a team of experienced volunteers who ensure every sail on the Menai Strait is safe, enjoyable and memorable.
At the core of our charity is our hub where volunteers can come along and gain experience and skills in boat building, preserving the historical fleet for future generations
