About us
Venice was a great center for music from very early times, and we need your help to preserve that musical heritage, a cultural treasure for the entire world, for future generations. You can make a big difference by becoming a member of Friends of Venice Music Project, a US 501c3 non-profit organization. With your help, we can preserve the musical tradition of Venice, bring to light forgotten gems of music from the Golden Age, and finance the restoration of the historic and beautiful places where we perform them.
Without Venetian Church music and Monteverdi's huge advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli, and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented, but also there would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it.
Researching music and creating modern editions is painstaking work, somewhat like musical archaeology. As a member of Friends of Venice Music Project, you will contribute to our musical and restoration efforts, and help support our mandate to “give back” to this city that has given so much to our cultural heritage. All donations are fully tax-deductible to the extent of the law for US taxpayers.
