Yara Arts Group, founded in 1990, is a resident company of La MaMa Theater in New York. In rehearsal we transform various materials into an experimental theater production in our signature style of multilingual dialogue and music supported by evocative visuals and projections. Timely issues are explored through the diverse cultural perspectives of the group’s members. A critic wrote: “The performance builds what good theatre should always build: an alternate world that allows us to re-learn and reflect upon the great questions at the core of our being human.” The company has created 35 theatre pieces: 23 pieces based on materials from Eastern Europe, 6 theater pieces were with Buryat-Mongolian artists from Siberia, 2 based on Kyrgyz epics from Central Asia, 3 on Japanese materials and one on Hawaiian. We measure our success by our ability to open our audiences to the ideas in our pieces. We also produce poetry, art and music events to support our shows.
