Weʼve raised £12,335 to raise money for Weston Park Hospital who took care of our mate Dave

Funded on Tuesday, 18th September 2018

    Story

In July 2016, our mate Dave was admitted to hospital with stomach pains, 48 hours late he was given the tragic news that Dave had terminal cancer and was given two months to live. At this time everyone prepared for the worst, fortunately Dave ignored this timescale and started to fight back.

Chemotherapy managed to stabilise his cancer and stopped it from growing. Not being satisfied with this Dave looked into the prospect of surgery. After hundreds of phone calls, meetings and many hours of research, Dave finally managed to find a surgeon who would operate on him, with the surgery booked for the start of the new year. Another heart-breaking setback followed a week before the surgery was booked for the final scan revealed the cancer had grown again to the point at which surgery was no longer an option.

Throughout his battle with cancer, Dave has somehow managed to remain positive taking to football management in his spare time and guiding Dronfield Victoria to the league title in his first season.

With the major chemotherapy treatments exhausted the only ones left available are private, expensive treatment not available on the NHS, treatments like this could give Dave valuable extra time, unfortunately chemotherapy wont last forever.

It is for this reason that 10 lads from Matlock of varying fitness (ranging from Mick to Aaron) will be embarking on the three peaks challenge. Attempting to climb Britain’s three highest peaks; Ben Nevis, Scaffell Pike, and Snowdon in the space of 24 hours. The 10 of us have been friends with Dave since we were 10 years old or younger, attending school and playing in the same football team.

Not only are we raising money to help Dave personally but also to help support the charity hospital that looks after him (Weston Park Sheffield) and other young people around Sheffield – a city close to all of our hearts and a place we hold many great memories together.

Please give whatever you can – all donations could make a massive difference.

    Thank you

This morning we received the heartbreaking news that Dave passed away in his sleep surrounded by his family and girlfriend Rachel, our thoughts are with them at this time. Whilst we are still coming to terms with the news we will still be carrying out our 3 peaks challenge on Friday. Proceeds will be going to Weston Park Hospital who took care of Dave throughout and as such we would still like to raise as much as possible for this fantastic place. Thank you for everyone’s support so far. RIP Dave you will be sorely missed x
