    Story

We are extremely proud to have two Scouts from 1St Marshfield selected to represent Avon at the 24th World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) during the Summer of 2019 in the USA. Hannah Kearney-Mitchell and Benji Cooper (aged 13yrs) were 2 of only 10 young people from Cotswold Edge District chosen after putting themselves forward for a selection day which involved physical and mental tasks examining their problem solving, teamwork and leadership skills.

The WSJ only occurs every 4 years and is the largest camping event organized by the Scout Movement, gathering as many as 50,000 Scouts and leaders from over 200 countries. In 2019 it will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the USA. The WSJ brings together young people from different countries and cultures in one place to promote peace and mutual understanding, form new friendships and develop essential life skills.

Our Scouts will be spending the next 18 months fundraising and participating in team building events with 72 Scouts from Avon County. On the 22nd July 2019 they will visit a major city (either New York or Washington DC) and then attend the main Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. They complete their adventure by joining another Scout camp run by one of the host nations, returning home on the 22nd August 2019.

The Jamboree site at the Summit Bechtel Reserve is one of the most advanced camping adventure bases for young people in the world. Activities include rock climbing, over 5 miles of zip lines, skateboarding, BMX Track, lots of water sports (including white water rafting) and traditional campfire crafts. Throughout the next couple of years Hannah and Benji will be sharing their experiences and inspiring others.

Each Scout will be expected to fundraise £3,000. This will not only enable their attendance at the event but also subsidises Scouts from other less fortunate countries to attend as well. Hannah & Benji are currently busy selling homemade products, doing odd jobs and organising village events (such as a Mexican evening). If you are inspired by the potential of the WSJ to enhance and develop the skills of young people, we would invite you to place a donation as every little bit helps.

    Many thanks
