222 kayak challenge, two men, two kayaks, 222 miles, leaving Dungeness late May 2020. Paul Levins & myself Graham Stobbs ( Swindon hub) set off across the English Chanel on a gruelling 29 mile continuous journey across the busiest shipping lane in the world, dodging ships & huge waves to get to our first destination, Boulogne, France.
From here we kayak on average 12 hours and 20 miles a day until we get to Pegasus Bridge memorial on the 6th June 2020 where we will lay a wreath & remember our fallen and their sacrifice. Moving on to our final stopping point, Point Du Hòc, where we intend to scale the sheer cliffs to the top as the American rangers did 75 years ago. Ending this epic journey of self discovery, recovery and mental ability.
Myself and Paul both suffer with PTSD and mental health, although not a visible wound, the effects are still as real. Having suffered for many years & not speaking out I tried to take my life May 2018! Having been through this journey and understanding why we are what we are, why we think like we do, why we react like we react. By therapy I find myself in a better place & able to now help others on theirs. The hubs have been set up to help support those through difficult times whether that be mentally, physically or financially or sometimes just & ear to rent, Andy Price opened the Veterans Hub, Weymouth just over a year ago and immediately found that veterans having been suffering in silence for years with mental health & has tried to give these guys & girls somewhere to relax ,feel part off and accepted, along with the usual banter & a cuppa. Paul Levins, Harrogate, again himself a sufferer has identified the need for these hubs and is In the process of opening up in the coming twelve months.
Walking with the wounded will also benefit from this crowd funding. supporting veterans that are vulnerable and helping in getting back on their feet and back into work, is essential work.
