Story
On 13th June, I will be taking on a challenge that is both physical and deeply personal: running 40 miles from Threlkeld Primary School, where I previously had the privilege of serving as Headteacher, to Old Hutton Primary School, where I am proud to now lead as Headteacher.
This route represents an important journey in my life. It connects two schools that have shaped me as an educator and as a person. Starting at Threlkeld and finishing at Old Hutton feels symbolic — a journey between two communities that mean a great deal to me and that I have been incredibly fortunate to be part of.
This challenge also marks a milestone year. I turned 40 on 27th March, and so this “40 for 40” challenge felt like the right way to mark the occasion — not with a celebration for myself, but by doing something that gives back and supports others.
Over the past 18 months, our school community has shown remarkable strength and compassion. Sadly, two of our families have experienced profound loss, and we have come together to support them in every way we can. Seeing the resilience of those families, and the kindness of the people around them, has been incredibly moving. This challenge is inspired by them and by the power of community that schools can create.
I want to use this challenge to raise money for three causes that are very close to my heart:
• Winston’s Wish, a charity that provides vital support for children and young people who are grieving the loss of someone important in their lives.
• The Poppy Atkinson Football Fund, which will support grassroots football across the country.
• A book fund that will allow us to provide children’s books to a number of organisations. I am passionate about the power of stories — when children fall in love with reading, it opens worlds of imagination, understanding and hope.
Every pound raised will be split equally between these three causes.
Forty miles will be tough, but it feels like a small effort compared to what many families face when dealing with grief and loss. If you are able to donate, share this page, or simply offer words of encouragement along the way, it would mean a huge amount.
Thank you for supporting this journey, for supporting these incredible causes, and for helping to make a difference for children and families who need it most.
