Story
On 13th June, I completed a challenge that was both physically demanding and deeply personal: running 40 miles from Threlkeld Primary School, where I previously had the privilege of serving as Headteacher, to Old Hutton Primary School, where I am proud to now lead as Headteacher.
This route represented an important journey in my life, connecting two schools and communities that have shaped me both professionally and personally. Starting at Threlkeld and finishing at Old Hutton felt incredibly symbolic — a journey between two places that mean a great deal to me and that I have been very fortunate to be part of.
This challenge also marked a milestone year. I turned 40 on 27th March, and the "40 for 40" challenge felt like the perfect way to celebrate — not with something for myself, but by doing something that gives back and supports others.
Over the past 18 months, our school community has shown extraordinary strength and compassion. Sadly, two of our families have experienced profound loss, and we have come together to support them in every way we can. Witnessing the resilience of those families and the kindness shown by those around them has been incredibly moving. This challenge was inspired by them and by the remarkable sense of community that schools can create.
I wanted to use this challenge to raise money for three causes that are very close to my heart:
• Winston's Wish, a charity that provides vital support for children and young people who are grieving the loss of someone important in their lives.
• The Poppy Atkinson Football Fund, supporting grassroots football opportunities for children across the country.
• A book fund that will provide children's books to a number of organisations. I am passionate about the power of stories — when children fall in love with reading, it opens worlds of imagination, understanding and hope.
Every pound raised will be split equally between these three causes.
The 40 miles were incredibly tough, but the day was also truly brilliant. I was overwhelmed by the support shown along the route. To everyone who came out to cheer, run sections with me, offer encouragement, donate or simply send kind messages — thank you. Your support made an enormous difference and carried me through some very challenging moments.
Completing this challenge feels like a small achievement compared to the challenges many families face when dealing with grief and loss. If you are still able to donate or share this page, your support will continue to make a meaningful difference.
Thank you for supporting this journey, these incredible causes, and the children and families who need it most.
