It all started at the beginning of the year when I became determined to compete in my first ever triathlon and signed up for the Sprint triathlon at Lake Passy near Chamonix.

On the 8th of April, my life and that of my family changed forever with the sudden and devastating death from a heart attack of Ian, my 28 year old godson. Despite living in the most beautiful environment and exercising til I drop for said triathlon, I have felt how, without people to talk to, I would have struggled more than I have.

The North Lancashire Counselling Service offers free counselling for people needing such support for many different reasons. However with a 6 month waiting list the need for increased funding is obvious.

Decision made: to raise funds.

Now comes the slightly mental bit.

Having seen friends, family and colleagues dealing with the diagnoses of cancer and the aftermath of surgery and treatment, I feel that one triathlon is not enough. In order to also fundraise for Cancer Research I have decided to do 7 sprint triathlons in 7 days. This is just a small gesture to acknowledge the horrible journeys people have to take to battle this disease.

One such person, my friend Jo, is using her blog whilst undergoing treatment, to raise awareness of issues with regard to treatment and is happy to endorse this endeavour. So, in order to raise funds, commencing on the 20th of August I plan to daily swim 750m, cycle 22km with a bit of a hill in it (this is the Alps) and walk (as quickly as possible, my 54 year old right achilles dictates that unfortunately) 5km, culminating in the Passy triathlon on the 26th of August.
