I am fundraising to raise the money for a power chair.
Last year I became immobilised overnight with a rare auto-immune condition. I was told that I would get better and be able to walk again but a year later it was discovered that I tested positive for stiff person syndrome. I already have stiff muscles in my feet, legs and buttocks which is why I cannot walk very far.
I am in pain all the time day and night, it's amazing how you get used to constant pain, although I would give anything for it to go away.
The prognosis is that I will gradually get worse, not better like I first thought. Although there is treatment that could help I don't know if I will get them or if they will indeed work as I have one of the rarest types of my condition.
Currently I have a manual wheelchair but I'm unable to use it myself for very long as I also have pain in my shoulders, neck and arms.
I long for independence and a power chair would give me that.
I wish I didn't have to ask for help but as my condition is so rare it doesn't come under one that the NHS will offer help towards and they are so expensive. Ranging from £800 to nearly £3000 I would be happy with one of the lower range ones which would suit my needs (back and shoulder support) And I need something that would last.
