Story

What is the challenge?

Starting at midday on Thursday 21st December, swimmers from Masters, National and Senior squads will be taking part in a 24 hour long swimathon. We will be swimming in 20 minute slots for 24 hours trying to cover as much distance as possible.

Who are we?

Swimming is Britain's most popular participation sport; it's also one of our most successful Olympic sports.  Atlantis Swimming Club began in 1979 and is one of Sussex's leading competitive swimming clubs, with swimmers consistently achieving County, Regional and National qualifying times year on year.

We provide a structured, safe, motivating and friendly environment in which all our swimmers have the opportunity to realise their full potential.  So at all times we strive for excellence; aspire to success; recognise and celebrate endeavour - and we never forget the importance of having fun along the way.

We offer swimming training and competition for all ages 7 and above.  In total we deliver over 40 hours of training per week under the leadership of the Head Coach and a skilled and experienced team of coaches.  Atlantis is affiliated to the South East Region of Swim England and also holds the SwimMark accreditation.

What Makes Our Project Great?

Over two thirds of our 324 members are children, aged 7 & over. Whether they love to compete, learn a new routine in artistic swimming, aquatic sport has loads of health benefits for our children. It is not just a sport for life but an arena where children learn to develop important life skills such as social engagement, resilience and determination.

They may well be rivals in the pool on race day, but poolside, the camaraderie helps develop lasting friendships. Spending up to 12 hours a week with their swimming squad, team mates support each other through the lows and the highs of tough training, competition successes and life outside of the pool.

This support network is vital to the success of Atlantis, it helps swimmers of all ages cope with demands of many hours of training and with their academic studies which are of paramount importance.

We aspire to inspire our athletes new and old. To give young children, adults and masters a chance to join a swimming club; to have fun, enjoy competing and benefit physically and emotionally from this rewarding sport.

What Are We Trying To Achieve?

We all have the same focus: To achieve a growing, thriving club, to ensure swimming is accessible to all children, young adults and masters and to maintain and ensure Atlantis is at the forefront of competitive swimming in the region. We are very lucky to have a strong and supportive membership, who helped Atlantis through the tough times the Pandemic created. We are back and as strong as ever; our open meets have returned, Atlantis won top club at the Sussex County Championships 2023, winners of the 2023 Sussex League and runners up in the National Arena Swimming League 2023 gaining promotion to the Premier League for 2024.

How we’ll spend the money raised

Funds raised will go towards replacing and/or buying new equipment to further enhance our training.  Atlantis is a great advocate of innovative training methods and was one of the first clubs to purchase and use underwater headsets.  This greatly improves communication between coach and swimmer.  We are also one of the first clubs in UK to use the swim bridges, an aid to improve underwater techniques.  We have also been able to purchase a backstroke ledge, and hope to purchase more but each one is over £800.

We are aiming to raise £8,000 in 2023 and we are so close. Our members and supporters have worked tirelessly this year and completed fun runs, sold reindeer hot chocolate cones, made Easter Hampers, raced virtual balloons around the world and so much more...... together, we have, so far, raised over £6700 can you help us reach our final target?
