Bolgatanga became Africa’s 2nd Fair Trade Town in 2014 and since then has hosted the Bolgatanga International Crafts and Arts Fair (BICAF), an annual community led event, showcasing the talents of the Upper East Region's craftspeople, the artisans across Ghana and the rest of the world.
This festival is vital for the people of Bolga because 22% of inhabitants rely on the income created from the Crafts and Arts industry, due to the limitations of agriculture caused by the hot and dry climate of this region.
BICAF has grown from a small fair with ten exhibitors, to over sixty in 2015, and even more in 2016. BICAF was organised by an NGO called TradeAid. TradeAid founded BICAF with the aim to eradicate poverty through creating sustainable business. It helps to generates more employment and wealth across the region, allowing craft people to secure orders, network internationally, increase tourism and also educate them on fair trade practice. Many of these small businesses would not have had the opportunity to sell their products nationally, let alone worldwide. Hence our theme, 'Weaving a way to a better future'.
We hope that through crowdfunding we can receive donations which will help us reach our target, and make sure BICAF 2017 is the best year yet. This is a difficult task, but we are committed to reaching our target, so that we can continue to improve the lives of the many local artisans in the region.
