    Story

In 2016 Shrewsbury hosted its first ever Festival of LGBT History, it was both magical and important - we could not have anticipated the response.
Copy and paste this link to see our 3 minute video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xyjmCjwqKo

Special guests Peter Tatchell and Stuart Milk spoke to nearly 1000 young people in schools and colleges in and around Shrewsbury; 200+ people visited the FREE exhibition at the town's Museum & Art Gallery, the FREE launch night - attended by 2 local mayors was a 'sell-out'; we had cabaret and films.

The event was entertaining and thought-provoking for LGBT people and non-LGBT people alike. One of the great things about it was the diversity of the audience.

It was difficult to explain the concept last year - it was totally new. We raised money through a Crowdfunding campaign, generous donations from individuals, a small grant, ticket sales for associated events and a lot of bucket rattling.

Crowdfunding sits nicely with our own principles - a lot of people giving a little makes something more robust and meaningful. And it gives us a great start!

The 2017 Festival will take place on 17 - 19 February, once again at the University Centre Shrewsbury - we have a great deal of support and the 4 organisers all give their time for free. Last year also saw 30 volunteers joining the team for the actual festival.

Every contributor will be thanked - on a poster and on any video we make (unless of course you say otherwise :-).

To give you an idea of what we can buy with your donation:
    £3 a volunteer's tabard
£10 signage cards for the exhibition
£20 the printing of one History Board
    £25 four A2 posters
£35 an advertising 'bollard cover' for the exhibition
    £40 a banner
£50 refreshments for our lovely volunteers
£80 hospitality for our guest speakers
    £120 a film licence
£360 a print run of the programme
£750 The Burnley Plays (Theatre piece)
    £1000 film-making & production

Blimey - these things are confusing - it seems we still have 12 hours to go and we are now increasing exceeding our new revised target - this is brilliant. Please do keep it coming as we will still have to find the difference between this and our original £2K target and that all takes us away from planning a fabulous weekend! 12 hours to go

Change of tactics - we are so fantastically grateful for the generous donations so far and we want this to be a massively fulfilling campaign - so we're nearly there! We have changed our target to £1,000. We pledge to raise the rest through some ridiculous sponsored wotnot or event involving cute fluffy soft toys or dancing around with a collecting box - or similar. Can we make £1K before midnight ....????????????

I am one of the volunteer organisers of the National Festival of LGBT History (Shrewsbury Hub). At the end of the 2016 Festival our first instinct was 'never again ....' purely because of all the hard work. Then we realised - it is not our choice, we have to do it ...
