Story
Our island-city has a long and proud history of producing excellent fighting men, a tradition that continues to this day. These boxers drew the crowds in their thousands and are remembered with great fondness and pride to this day.
Portsmouth City Council have provisionally agreed to allow a permanent memorial to Portsmouth's boxing history in Victoria Park, and we intend to create a beautiful monument in celebration of boxers such as Harry Andrews, Matty George, Arthur 'Kid' Connor, Len Lemaux, Billy Streets, Stoker Bob Reynolds, Steve Goldring, Harry Vine, Monty Brown and Johnny Smith.
A simple but ornate memorial, it will include delicately inlaid photos of the boxers named above, and the Portsmouth crest and motto 'Heaven's Light our Guide'.
The memorial will be the 66th listed monument in Portsmouth and it will mean our boxers are celebrated in perpetuity. The funds as you would expect have to be raised among ourselves, and any contribution you can kindly make to help make this memorial a reality will be very gratefully received. PLEASE NOTE: In the event of the memorial not going ahead all donations will be fully refunded.
We can't do it without the help of those who also remember our boxing heroes with pride.
Many thanks,
Andrew

7 years agoThanks to everyone who's donated so far, you've all been very generous especially seeing as it's been Christmas, an expensive time for everyone. Boxing News magazine have given the memorial some coverage in this week's issue, so do Facebook this around to all you know. We've some way to go yet so any awareness you can raise regarding our fundraising will be welcome. All the best, Andrew
