Story

St Mary Magdalene Church stands in the village of Campsall 8 miles north of Doncaster and is a Grade 1 listed building. The church was founded by Ilbert de Laci of Pontefract and was built in the early 12th Century. It is thought by many to be the church where Robin Hood married Maid Marion.

The church contains many unique features including many ancient grave stones, the alter in the Lady Chapel was designed by Pugin and brought to Campsall in 1959 from the disused at Ackworth Grange. There is also a 14th Century Rood screen acquired in 1803 and thought to have come from Wallingwells Abbey and a Flaxman sculpture depicting the distribution of relief to the poor. High in the bell tower there is also a Priest Room in the Bell Tower.

The church also contains many historical items, for example at the back of the church there is a Hutch wooden chest dating from the 15th century and there is also the font dating from the 14th Century.

Unfortunately the years have taken a toll on this historic church and it is in desperate need of a new roof! When it rains it is pouring in through the roof and down the walls. Anybody who has been in church will have seen multiple buckets in strategic places hoping to catch as much of the water as possible!

In addition, the boiler is also aging and is struggling to continue meeting the demands of heating such a large building.

Following a thorough survey this year we have been told the cost is likely to be £250,000 to replace the entire roof and a further £30,000 for the boiler, so any donation or fundraising is more than welcome.
