    Story

We are a boxing club based in Paulsgrove, Portsmouth. We are very much a community club that looks to offer fun fitness sessions for children to learn the basics of boxing, have fun, play games and make new friends. We have teamed up with the Dieticians at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth to provide information on how to eat well and avoid too much sugar and so this is really about trying to tackle childhood obesity and the associated risks of diabetes. We also offer boxing fitness sessions for older children, youths and seniors and are able to provide competitive boxing opportunities through our affiliation with England Boxing. Providing these sessions, associated equipment and competitive boxing opportunities all costs money and in order for our club to survive we urgently need funding support. We need to keep session costs down to encourage more children to take up the sport and make the club more accessable to the youth of our our community 'off the streets and into the gym' is a motto we firmly believe in. In order for a boxer to compete it costs money, usually £20 a year to register and another £20 for an annual medical before they have even bought their boxing kit, all too many times we have seen potential boxers give up as they and/or their parents simply cant afford it. The pride and sense of achievement that a boxer gets that first time they step into the ring is something special. Competitive boxing often means travelling considerable distances and the club has a minibus that allows us to take the boxers, family and supporters when they might otherwise not be able to watch them box, but of course a minibus requires maintenance, tax and insurance. In summary this is about providing affordable fitness opportunities for children whilst educating them on a healthy diet in a bid to lower childhood obesity and diabetes, it is about providing the youth of our community a place to keep fit and it is about maintaining a competitive boxing club.

I am a boxing coach at the City of Portsmouth boxing club and have seen at first hand the positive effects that Boxing provides. In discussions with the dieticians at QA hospital its clear that we need to do something to fight childhood obesity and associated risk of diabetes.
