    Story

Worldwide ~ 1.9 million people were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and this number is projected to double by 2032. Incidence rates continue to be ~1 in 8 women and ~1 in 870 men who will be diagnosed with this disease in their lifetime. Given the complexity of the cancer, and the lack of truly effective treatment, ~20% of people don’t survive to year 5.

Breast cancer is highly complex, with multiple ‘types’, and treatment is determined on a patient by patient basis. Treatment options commonly include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and Targeted Therapy. Chemotherapy is regarded as non-specific, aiming to indiscriminately kill both healthy and cancerous cells, in the hope that cancer will be killed first. Targeted therapy targets growth or hormonal receptors, which can be found on some cancer, but are also still present on healthy cells. Whilst Targeted therapy is relatively more ‘specific’ it continues to affects healthy cells, with both Chemo- and Targeted therapy having similarly severe side effects. Irrespective of the cancer ‘type’, chemotherapy treatment across all cancer types is ~30% effective, which surprising is considered ‘very good’.

Our team identified a common ‘target’ integral in all breast cancer cells. Furthermore, lead compounds do not rely on the receptors other drugs target, thereby removing treatment complexity, making MicroQuin’s treatment universal. In addition, the way we deliver our compounds ensures only breast cancer cells are targeted, healthy cells are not affected, eliminating/minimising potential side effects. In fact in vitro and in vivo results showed no toxicity. In addition, our experimental data shows that within a 96 hours window 100% of breast cancer cells died in vitro, with a 91% tumour reduction in vivo.
