Story
We are currently attempting to raise £15,000 towards the following
David Teacher aged 92, (93 in December 2016) a D-Day Juno Beach veteran and a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, Belgium December 1944.
Although David has been back to Normandy many, many times this last year, 2016, was slightly special. Through research of his private documents, Unit, Squadron records and his Commanders private diary, we were able to pin point the date, time and place of his landing to within ten meters. This year he was taken back to the very spot on Juno Beach, (Mike sector) he drove his Bedford QL truck on on June 6th 1944. A photo of this moment was used for the cover of his book - It was then we had an idea!
Take a authentic WW2 Bedford QL truck back to Normandy in June 2017. That in itself is a good idea, but David is wheel chair bound so how can he get into a three tonne truck. So we're having a special lift, hoist, designed and built so that Davi can get in and out of the cabin. We have permission from Normandy council to drive up on the Beach at
Courseulles-sur-Mer , Normandy, France which is where David landed. Juno Beach centre the museum for Juno beach are planning a small display about the RAF beach units.
We wish to coincide this with the D-Day commemorations in early June.
So we need money to get David and two careers to Normandy, hotels etc. A much bigger expense is to get a WW2 Bedford truck there, after modifications, seat belts , hoist, lift etc.
This truck has to be driven to Portsmouth on a transporter, then driven onto a ferry etc. We plan to use the lift, hoist to help a few of the Normandy veterans go for rides in the Bedford QL.
Other funds is needed to take David back to Belgium. To Ghent, Brussels and the area of Bastogne which is where David played his part in the Battle of the Bulge. David has only been back to this area once many, many years ago.
