    Story

RX53 Dorothy Melinda is a retired fishing boat which sits on a traffic island at Hastings railway station. She is a unique heritage asset made even more valuable by the recent destruction of her sister RX134 Stacey Marie. Much of her upper structure is in need of replacement yet the part that matters most, the hull, looks remarkably good. She could certainly be restored by volunteers as other vessels have been. She has been offered a temporary home by the East Hastings Angling Association (EHAA). Long term the vacant site opposite the Dolphin pub would be most appropriate.

The traditional clinker-built wooden fishing boat, with the wheelhouse at the stern, is an unmistakable symbol of Hastings. Only seven now remain. We mustn't lose another.

The current situation is that, unless the council change their mind, Dorothy Melinda will be broken up and disposed of overnight on the 29th of January - less than two weeks from now.

Contracts have been signed with the demolition contractors. Method plans and risk assessments have been written and approved. Stagecoach bus and Network rail have agreed the date for site access. All this has been planned over many months and many meetings.

There is now simply no time for a change of plan unless she is granted a stay of execution.

There is still a chance that the council will have a change of heart and act decisively. One of the purposes of this this fundraiser is to show them the level of support for that change. If it happens then the monies raised will be used to fund her removal from the station and to begin restoration. If things don't pan out as hoped then all funds received will be refunded.

I'm devastated . The campaign has failed and RX53 Dorothy Melinda has been destroyed. To suggest her destruction was urgent because she posed a danger to the public is ridiculous. Instead of allowing relocation at no cost to the council, thousands have been wasted wrecking an irreplaceable piece of our heritage. It is bonkers beyond belief. The funds will go to the remaining retired wooden boats at the Stade, Fishermen's museum, and the historic lifeboats. A new problem has cropped up with the plan to move retired fishing boat Dorothy Melinda to the compound of the East Hastings Sea Angling Association (EHSAA). Numerous boats have previously been restored at the EHSAA including the town's two retired lifeboats. Today I received an email from a council official to the effect that the verbal agreement I had for her to go there has been blocked. I will try to overturn this but I don't know what the chances are. If she can't go there - where can she go? Fingers crossed but even more so than normal!

A few headaches! The stay of execution clock is ticking. A local company is ready to move her but there’s a problem. The landowner had previously agreed demolition and removal at night, but, as a 3 metre wide load, she can't use the highway in darkness. It seems unlikely a daytime move can be negotiated in the short time remaining so I have asked for an extension to June when there is enough daylight at 5 am for the boat to go on the road but still hours before the first bus movement. Fingers crossed!

I love this boat outside our railway station, I hope enough money is raised to restore it so it can stay there.
