Story
We are looking for donations to help pay for the materials required to transform the garden of a 5 year old girl who has had a battle in life since the day she was born...
We launched GARDEN SOS 2024 to help give someone worthy an outdoor space to be able to play and enjoy quality of life. We asked the general public for nominations. We got down to 3 before a random wheel picked our Winner.
This is Emilia's story
I'm nominating my daughter Emilia, 5, for the amazing chance to have a garden that will change her life.
At my 20 week scan, we found out that Emilia had a severe heart defect known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. The condition means that the left side of her heart failed to grow in the womb. We were told that 3 palliative surgeries were needed to keep Emilia alive.
This meant at 5 days old, Emilia had her first open heart surgery, spending her first 2 months of life at Birmingham Children's Hospital. She had another 6 months old and her 3rd open heart surgery in April 2023 at 5 years old. Emilia suffered from a stroke during the first surgery, leading her to have a few developmental delays including her speech.
These heart surgeries are unfortunately not a cure for her heart condition, meaning that one day she may require a heart transplant if eligible.
She has been through so much in her 5 years of life and continues to do so, with regular blood checks at the hospital as she's on Warfarin to prevent clots, and regular check ups at Birmingham Children's as she still has a leaky heart valve which she takes medication for.
We recently started to Home Educate Emilia and want to be able to give her a safe and secure garden for her to enjoy learning and playing in. She absolutely loves the outdoors, even in winter when we have to wrap her up in multiple layers due to her lips turning blue in the cold!
We need the funds so desperately to make this a reality. Please give what you can or if you can donate materials please contact us
