In August 2015, the island of Mindanao in the Philippines was hit by heavy monsoon rain, causing flashfloods that left hundreds of people without food, water, clothes and shelter. The heavy rain caused extreme flooding in the Bukidnon area, considered the main rice producer for the entire country.
International financial support was provided through local calamity relief organisations. The focus was to provide help in the following sectors: emergency relief, including shelter, health, livelihoods, water and sanitation.
However, most of that money never arrived at the devastated areas. At first instance, people were put into buildings like gyms and warehouses. These places appeared to be damaged, overcrowded, non-hygienic. In the long run, the victims were left there without any supervision, including lack of food, sanitary facilities, medical attention.
We have identified 100 families that were affected by the flood and continue to live with the consequences. Our aim is to get them out of this situation and assist them to become independent/re-inserted into society.
