Story
UPDATED INFO: Unfortunately, on medical grounds Gary is no longer able to proceed with his wish of the Bungee Jump. Which, understandably, has been really upsetting for him. BUT Gaz is determined to raise this money and so instead of pushing his adrenaline boundaries, he will be pushing his mental and physical boundaries…joining the Running Miles Ricky Races 5 event.
Gary will join the runners, and hand-cycle his way around the 3.28-mile loop event for as many laps as he can in a timed 6-hour event.
If you are local, please feel free to come along to the Aquadrome on Thursday 23rd November and cheer Gaz on to achieve this goal.
Gary’s fundraising story:
We recently decided to visit West Wittering beach for the first time and when researching West Wittering we came across the fabulous beach wheelchairs that are available to hire there. These chairs help less able visitors to enjoy the beach and the sea, and hiring one of these chairs did exactly that for my brother, Gary, on our visit!
Gary has a disability called ARSACS Syndrome (Autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay) which is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder characterised by a triad of early onset cerebellar ataxia, spasticity, and sensorimotor polyneuropathy (distal muscle wasting). People with ARSACS typically have abnormal tensing of the muscles (spasticity), problems with balance and coordination (cerebellar ataxia), and reduced sensation and weakness in the arms and legs (peripheral neuropathy).
Thanks to these amazing beach wheelchairs, for the first time in years, Gaz, who is fully wheelchair dependent, was able to experience getting absolutely covered in sand and got to dip his feet into the sea…all with a huge smile on his face! A big deal!
Since this amazing beach day, Gaz decided he would like to raise money to fund a new beach wheelchair for West Wittering to allow more less abled people to also have a great beach experience.
Please, if you can, give Gary a sponsor for a very great meaningful cause - thank you!
Go Gary!! 🎉
