Story

We're trying to get things moving on behalf of this amazing young man to get him the Wheelchair that he needs.
His Mum wrote
Thomas was born three months prematurely, weighing 2lb 7oz with a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy - Spastic Quadriplegic, affecting postural control and all four limbs. He is unable to walk and is completely wheelchair dependent. Thomas is now 20 years old and a strapping young man in his second year at Cambridge Regional College. He loves listening to music and Heart Radio, watching Top Gear and Deal or No Deal and spending time on his iPad and computer.
Thomas desperately needs a new power wheelchair, as his existing chair, which he had new at age 11, is now nine years old. Unsurprisingly, it is too small, with unsupportive seating and poor driving position. The wheelchair standing function no longer works and due to its age, is proving very unreliable.
Thomas ideally needs a Permobil standing power chair, costing approximately £26,000, that has been recommended by his physiotherapist and wheelchair therapist. Unfortunately, this type of chair is not funded by Wheelchair Services and most charities will only fund for children up to age 18.
This new power chair will continue to give Thomas the independence he needs and the comfort he requires to be able to change his position throughout the day. He can independently elevate the leg rests and tilt and recline the back rest which all help with his complex health needs. As Thomas is unable to sit or stand independently, he can also use the power chair to do this himself with the sit to stand function.
Thomas is a very happy, charismatic young man and always remains positive throughout his difficulties, enduring many operations including major spinal surgery. His condition will never improve but having a power chair like this makes all the difference and is an essential part of Thomas' life - and in Thomas' opinion, his favourite possession - even better than the TV or computer!
