    Story

In January, 8 kids from HGS are going to Ethiopia to visit some charities that we support. We will start in Addis Ababa visiting two main charities: firstly, we will be doing the Addis Ababa Food Run, a charity that gives hot meals out to homeless people on the streets of Addis Ababa once a week. For many of these people it is the only proper meal they get, and along with raising money, we have collected clothes, shoes, and bags to give to these people. We will then visit the Fistulas Women’s Hospital, which helps women who have become incontinent and therefore have been kicked out of their communities. The Fistula hospital, while treating the incontinency, also provides a safe and healthy start to life for the newborns and their mothers. Again, we have collected clothes, shoes and baby equipment for both the women and their babies. The next leg of our journey will be a trek to visit two remote primary schools in the Ethiopian countryside. Every year we donate to these schools. This year one of the buildings is in danger of collapsing. As a result we would like to pay for a full structural repair, as well as buying some benches for the classes. We also would like to pay for some improvements in the other school. These schools are tiny, and HGS’s help over the years has really transformed them: for example, we have provided money to build a whole new classroom in one school. To raise money for our charities we have already: held bake sales, organised a non-uniform day, are selling Ethiopian baskets at 2 local fetes, and are organising a disco. We also have collected clothes and other supplies to donate to the school. We have raised a a lot so far, but there is so much we still need to do and would be very grateful for any donation. All of the proceeds are going directly the schools and we are overseeing the project to ensure the money is spent well. It is a really wonderful cause. Thank you – or as they say in Ethiopia – 'Amesegënallô'!
