What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is the new way to raise money for a personal cause on JustGiving.

We are a family dedicated to preserving life. In 2012 we walked a thousand miles, all the way from Sussex in the UK to the Spanish Pyrenees, with our Irish Cob, Maggie…after eleven years of managing Plawhatch a Biodynamic Farm.

It was not our intention to start a refuge for horses but, when we arrived here, Maggie sent out a call to horses that needed our help in the area. She knew why we had come here! Before long Maggie’s call was answered and the Helios Home for Horses and Humans was born.

So far, we have rescued 12 horses in Sobrarbe, Aragon, most of them over 25 years old. Every horse has come to us in need of a home, love, food and shelter, all happily provided. Each horse has given years of service to humans in this remote mountain area and we feel it is time for us to give back to them!

You can read more about our story including our vision, experience and how we care for the horses via this link:

You can also find us on Facebook: Helios - a home for horses and humans/ Helios- un hogar para caballos y humanos (http://tinyurl.com/helioshorse) ~ full of updates and images.

Until now, we have been funding the care of these amazing animals entirely ourselves but we are currently struggling to meet the outgoings on renting land and buying hay.
It costs us 2€ a day to feed a horse~ This initial figure we are raising will give us the support we need in saving and enhancing the lives of horses. It will cover the horses needs for the next 8 months while we hone the details of our 3 stage business plan and fund-raising strategies to sustain and develop this work. Our ultimate longer term goal is to create a Natural Park for horses!

In anticipation, we are extremely grateful for any donations we receive and we will keep you up to date with our progress.

Thank you,
Tom & Julia

Our 5th horse in the herd is Prince, a true survivor now aged 30! We can't talk about Prince without mentioning Calcetines, they came together 3 years ago, found abandoned on a mountain side. Inseparable, always walking in unison. Calcetines died last year and Prince whinnies, not in distress, but like he used to, calling for Calcetinas when she was out of sight. He has a brand on his butt, it can be seen for one month in the summer and only when the sun is at the right angle, it's a Royal brand, hence the name! Prince on the right

Xena is our 4th horse - we call her the "top model" because she is so beautiful! Xena was found by us 4 years ago tethered in a dark cow barn. She found it difficult to integrate with the herd at first because she had never been with horses before and had been separated from her mother when she was 4 months old! Xena is a very pushy, greedy and curious horse with an intelligent and loveable nature, she can be irritating to the others in the herd but is slowly working her way up the pecking order! Please give what you can.

Horse number 3 is our very special Irish Cob Maggie - really she should have been the first!! Maggie is unstoppable, full of surprise, the type of horse you would want to take on a long walk!!! Maggie stands out from the rest of the herd, not alone but different because of her breed and cultural differences. We, as a family are endebted to her for helping us change our lives!
