Homelessness is a brutal reality faced by thousands of people across the country, and nowhere can this be seen so clearly as in Manchester. Labelled the 'Homeless Hot spot' of the north, Greater Manchester alone contains over 3,200 people living rough on the streets. This total is a dramatic rise from only 5 years ago, with a noticeable rise in women and young people forced onto the streets, which can be traced back to the cuts of council funding to homeless shelters across the city.

In an effort to mask the reality of homelessness, the council refused to acknowledge over 60% of the 5000 individuals who presented themselves as homeless at the city hall, on the basis of 'intentional homelessness' or 'not being in desperate need'. Logic like this is absurd and inhumane to say the least.

In an attempt to help, my tutorial group of 10 students have decided to both raise awareness and funds to provide a small help to these people in need. As part of the project we will be speaking with charities and the people themselves to see what best can be done with our funds. We are currently planning on organising food and drink packages to be distributed as well as clothing and other essentials.

Primarily the project is an effort to humanise these people, and understand their lives by making conversation. We understand we are not in a financial position as students to provide homes, but even if we only lift some spirits and fill some stomachs, something will have been achieved!
