Story

We appreciate your anonymous donation. In Japan, it's customary to send money for the funeral, and there's a tradition for the family to give return gifts. If names are attached, the family might feel obligated to give return gifts, even though we genuinely don't expect or want them to have this extra burden.

Jamie loved this photo and his good friend Todd won first prize in a photo contest. The title and explanation are:

‘The Scholar'

Many of you know this guy. His name is Jamie, and he worked at Eiken for many years. He was not only our smartest colleague but also lived the furthest away (even further than me). He was also famous for being able to drink several hundred beers at a time, though this is normal for Australians. One night he spilled an entire bowl of ramen on his pants.

Now he's a widely respected language-testing scholar and lives in London.

The photo was taken on a summer evening at a small café in Amsterdam, along the canals. Sunshine was pouring in through the open window. A group of college students were laughing and drinking outside on the street, but the café was empty except for us - two foreigners from Saitama.

-----

Jamie made an enormous contribution to English language assessment. He was a great collaborator with colleagues and fellow academics. But most of all Jamie was an extremely popular colleague and a great friend to many. Always passionate but also fun. His friends and colleagues will miss so much about him.
