Story
Educate Me is a registered Egyptian non profit foundation. The foundation was initailly set up to educate underpriviledged children in Talbeya a very poor part of Cairo where they are often removed from school because of poverty. State education is not free in Egypt but costs around 200 Egyption Pounds a year. To put this in context 200 Egyptian pounds is around £8.45 ! Parents are invited into after school clubs along with the children, to gain their support and, in many cases to teach them to read themselves.
This programme grew and a curriculum evolved which is very progressive compared with the educational model offered by state schools in Egypt. More emphasis on each child and a creative, innovative approach with much less front of class learning by rote which is the norm in Egypt.
The foundation has continued to grow and last year launched a pre school, a teacher training programme and now runs a religiously and socially diverse community school in Talbeya
The Educate Me foundation is run by a group of young, dynamic internationally educated Egyptians. Funding is sought for diverse items such as educational equipment and books, as well as food for the provision of a hot school lunch.
I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time in Egypt over the last couple of years and was able to visit the after school club in Talbeya. The children are all so enthusiastic and happy, and their futures depend heavily upon the work of the Educate Me foundation.
My friends and I are running in the Bath Half marathon on Sunday 12th March in support of this foundation and would love to count on your support.
Many thanks in advance,
Johanna Murphy,
Clemmie Kerr
