Story

Justice Congo Group needs your help, please.

Justice Congo Group is an independent campaigning organisation, working to raise awareness and action on the little-known emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The minerals we all have in our phones are mined in the east of DRC. Did you know that Congo's neighbour, Rwanda, has for nearly two years been invading DRC through its proxy militia M23, in order to get its hands on these minerals? They terrorize the local Congolese population with violence, rape and murder, so that the local people flee from the mineral mines areas, leaving the Rwanda-backed soldiers access to the rich mineral mines. Minerals are then smuggled into Rwanda and sold to our mobile phone companies as Rwandan produce. It is the war in the heart of Africa that hardly anyone knows about.

Justice Congo Group was launched in March 2022, with the help of Global Justice Now, and now works closely with its partner charity, Next Century Foundation. We have a membership of 70 people, and together we lobby MPs and the government, hold film screenings, take stalls at local street festivals, engage with civil society in DRC, and talk to our friends and families about the largely unknown horrors taking place in DRC, and how we can all help.

Our work is based on the superb network of DRC contacts that we are in touch with on a daily basis. This work is the lifeblood of Justice Congo Group, and we are fundraising for a salary for our Congolese campaign manager who does this work, as well as for our ongoing running costs. Because we are politically active we cannot register as a charity, but our links with our partner charity, Next Century Foundation, mean you can donate through them, if you prefer to make a charitable donation.

This is a picture of the beautiful land in South Kivu, eastern Congo DRC, which has been fought over so painfully for 200 years, because of its rich mineral and agricultural resources.
