Story
Sea-Change
Surely at this moment there could not be a more appropriate theme from Leith Writing, calling local authors and those who wish to write about this special place?
As local author and founder of Leith Writing, Tim Bell, explains:
Our name, Leith, comes from a Gaelic word meaning ‘liquid’. The town has been at the river mouth for 1,000 years, changing all the time. What does change mean to our home, our family, ourselves - to resist change, to be a part of it, to be perplexed by it, to celebrate it. Change has a past, a present and a future.
Here we are in our fourth year.
First there was "The Darting Salamander'", a collection of writings brought together to celebrate 100 years since the amalgamation of Leith and Edinburgh.
Then in 2022 came "The Seagull At The Shore", an anthology of 26 fresh writings for, by, and about Leith.
Then, to 2023. when our inspiration revolved around 'Persevere!' Never was a word more apt for Leith, and apt for this annual project. From that came our most recent anthology, "Small Talk On The Walk"
So, how can you help us now?
Please consider contributing toward the costs involved in the design, printing, and distribution of the new 2024 work. We estimate that £1,500 will be close to the mark and invite you to help us reach that target.
The 2024 anthology is not yet named, but whatever name should emerge from the writings, the book will be launched on November 1st 2024.
As in previous years we would just stress that no one in the group receives any remuneration or reimbursement for their efforts. All are enthusiastic volunteers who love Leith, and love creative writing.
And the printed copies are distributed completely free within the Leith community. Money should never be a barrier to the enjoyment of the creative arts.
Let me close by sharing the words of the Edinburgh Makar, Hannah Lavery, which appear on the cover of the 2023 anthology:
Leith has always held this city's most vibrant stories. In these times which require so much from us all, that requires such tenacity and endurance, community is what can sustain us and inspire us. In this collection of stories, a community emerges from the pages. One which offers the readers solidarity and insight. It is so heartening to see that even in times we often describe as divisive, we can find ways to come together.
All contributions are most warmly welcomed. Please help us support writing by our community, about our community, in what is rapidly becoming an annual Leith event.

Solidarity and thanks to all at LW. The efforts of grassroots creatives ensure those too often excluded from the arts are offered a seat at the table, their stories told and voices heard.
