The Lighthouse Project Kent has been supporting the community for 5 years. We understand how segregation within the community can cause isolation, loneliness and misunderstanding between communities and people.

We have been supporting young people and families and while doing so have identified that young people are often deprived of opportunities to learn from other generations. We believe that inter-generational work will break barriers within the community and forge important relationships between elderly persons within the community and young people.

Our focus will be ex-service men and women, their families and veterans. We will be facilitating sessions that bring together these people and give them an opportunity to share stories, struggles, issues and an understanding of society and the changes that have affected them.

We will deliver weekly meetings, follow up work and events.

We believe it will help develop a mutual respect in the community, provide opportunities to engage with different groups in the community and reduce isolation and misunderstanding between generations. Character development is important and bringing these groups of people together, social skills will increase and respect and responsibility will be fostered.

It is currently an area greatly overlooked and we believe that the older generation has the ability to share great knowledge, insight and change perceptions within the community. We also strongly feel that young people have the ability to shape their futures based on insight and understanding.

We already have groups awaiting access but with central funding not readily available for our focus we are striving to push forward. It has been a year of hard work and we have secured a large part of the total cost for the project but are £5400 away now from being able to begin.
