Story
Lord Mayor Pauline Murphy 2016/17 Fund raising for charities Mesothelioma and Frontline Veterans Support
Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer, however in Plymouth it is high due to the widespread use of asbestos in the dockyard between the 1950s and 1970s, most people that worked in the dockyard during this period were exposed to asbestos some without knowing it, it appears that many people in Plymouth have a connection to somebody who has been affected by mesothelioma or another asbestos related disease.
As well as providing support and friendship to those diagnosed with mesothelioma, support group members also campaign with a view to seeking recognition and justice for all victims whilst at the same time raising money for research in the hope that one day a cure will be found.
Frontline Veterans Support
Frontline Veterans Support is a local charity that began life as a small coffee morning back in 2012, set up by two veterans living with Combat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and not receiving the support they knew they needed. Today the group has expanded yet remains local, and aims to support local Forces and Service veterans living with PTSD as well as their partners, carers & families.
These two charities are both worthy causes and I look forward to working with them. If you can support them in any way throughout the year I know this would make a huge difference to the charities and those they help.
