Mersea Island and the Blackwater is a very special place. It is simply wrong in the 21st Century that the Government considers the best way to get rid of Nuclear Waste left over at Bradwell is to simply dump it in our estuary.
With failing water reports, high levels of nitrates and heavy metals already present in the Blackwater it is difficult to see why Government considers this a suitable place at all. Adding a daily cocktail of nuclear waste where we sail, swim and live next to, must stop.
In July 2105 the Environment Agency agreed not to prosecute Magnox for continuing to dump after its original 12 month permit expired. The EA did this so that Magnox could continue to dump while the EA considered Magnox’s new application to extend the life of the permit we are now challenging.
The consultation process ended on 15th December 2016 and we have submitted our response.
We are working with Marine process experts to challenge the poor consultation process and Scientists to consider the evidence prepared by Magnox and challenge its inadequacy, including risk to public health and the marine environment. Money raised here funds our legal challenge. The more we raise the more robust that challenge
We are prepared to challenge the EA in the High Court through Judicial Review if this new license is issued.
Judicial Review may be the only solution to stop the dumping and we will look to raise further funding as and when required.
