    Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
We first noticed a change in Mason's head shape at around 3 months of age, it began with a little flattening at the side of his head and we mentioned this to our health visitor who advised that this would be fine and would correct itself, this did not stop us worrying so we tried everything we could to ensure we took the pressure off the flat spot by purchasing a special babymoov lovenest pillow which we used daily where ever we went, this has been created to make sure pressure is distributed evenly across the whole of the skull. We also tried various forms of repositonal therapy throughout the day making sure Mason was never on his flat side of his head hoping it would round out without further treatment.

As the weeks went by we then started to notice Mason would only ever turn his head to the left hand side during playtime, when he slept and even when held upright. After many doctors appointments and two trips to A&E Mason was diagnosed with torticollis (tight neck muscles) and as a result we were also informed he has severe Brachycephaly (Flat Head Syndrome).

Mason received physiotherapy fortnightly to correct his torticollis which they thought in turn would help with his plagiocephaly but it has continued to get worse. We contacted the Steeper Clinic in Leeds who recommended STARband helmet treatment to begin as soon as possible and we have an upcoming appointment to get Masons helmet measured and ordered on the 22/02/17. It will be fitted 2 weeks after this date as currently the helmets are only made in the USA and shipped over.

After much research we found that the UK usually advise that this condition will resolve itself up to the age of 18 months, this is not always the case and there is no funding on the NHS to treat Flat Head Syndrome as it is considered to be a cosmetic issue, however other countries such as the USA recognise this as a medical issue with studies showing amazing results.

THANK YOU to everyone who has helpped us get our target you can still donate all donations going to Hadstart4Babies which aims to raise awareness of plagiocephaly and brachycephaly, conditions which are being diagnosed in an increasing number of babies. Plagiocephaly and brachycephaly can be treated using a non-invasive helmet andtreatment is most effective between the ages of four and 12 months, as that is when the skull is experiencing its most rapid growth and is at its most malleable. Treatment in the UK costs a maximum of £2,500.

Well thank you to everyone that has got us past the half way mark means so much to us all... in the photos you can see the chart of how bad Mason head is and the docs just telling us that it may only going back to the top of the yellow line... As Me and Daniella have come to terms with not only the helmet for a year but the fact his head may never go back to normal.. Mason is still a normal amazing little boy and he takes on anything that comes his way with his massive smile and cheeky look on his face...
