Story
I have been training for over a year now for the Marathon Des Sables, and its now almost time for the Hardest Footrace, starting April 2017. I have never asked for charity before, but for this event, I've chosen a place very close to home and heart.
Montgomery Orphanage is a Christian run establishment in Zimbabwe. I have been supporting them for the last 6 years, but only with clothes/crayons and sweets, and whatever I can take with me when I go back on holiday. They are constantly stretched due the to difficult times in Zimbabwe. They have a huge spectrum of children there, from babies, who have just arrived, to young adults, who have progressed all the way through and now at college. All of this is funded by themselves. They are constantly trying to find money for simple things such as school shoes (on average 2 pairs per child per year), backpacks, fuel for the truck that takes them to and from the local school. They are a small orphanage, but with a very big heart, and anything we can raise will help them

8 years agoI finished... wow, what an amazing experience. I loved it, and made the most of every minute. I met some amazing people, including Duncan Slater (the double amputee), Tom (who came 3rd male finisher), and my tent mates were just amazing. This is a really brutal race, and some great lessons learnt. It doesnt matter how much or how hard you have prepared for something, but there is always a curveball waiting for you, and as long as you don't panic, and deal with it then and there, you can survive. Mentally challenging..

8 years agoWe are close now to departure time, and I've started to taper my training. Just a nice easy 16km on Saturday (with some compass navigation practice), and a 50km cycle with a friend. Next 2 weeks will be spend stretching, hitting the sauna, trying a bit of bikram yoga (part of the heat training i guess, but don't think it will make a big difference). Starting to pack my food, which is being restricted to around 2000Kcals a day, and so far weighs in at 3.56kgs. Might be able to take a bit of weight off this, but something to work towards.
