Story
In 2023, the One Love Project now supports over 200 children, providing long-term elementary and primary education as well as specialist care, equipment and counselling.
The school and special needs community care centre have grown in popularity, and its overall studentship has grown exponentially. There are 62 students boarding, with the majority of these being orphans who would not have sufficient resources or care without the school and its staff. There are 24 members of staff; who truly give their all to the students, including the social workers, caretakers and therapists; some of whom volunteer their time.
Conditions at the school are basic; and donations made can contribute to improving the dormitories by eradicating the mould, building better insulted areas, and providing bedding and other essentials. Children would benefit from new uniforms and shoes; and potentially a utilities area where laundry can be washed regularly. Following a recent review of the school, it would be ideal to include additional vocational study areas for tuition, employ new teachers for our upcoming P7 class, and facilitate a functioning medical room with a school nurse.
Our Little Tribe is the special needs community care centre; where 9 children with various disabilities; including cerebral palsy, autism, and Down’s Syndrome are looked after. They receive an assisted elementary education, and some vital therapies that their families cannot afford. The children enrolled here undertake physiotherapy, and occupational therapy twice a week. They also work on speech therapy and play therapy to help support their social and emotive confidence. However, despite the great work of the staff the children still suffer the long journeys to the school twice a day on dangerous roads and often suffer with malnutrition at their family home due to the financial poverty. We hope to provide better transport for the students and support the wellbeing of the children by providing essential medication and meals outside of the school too.
Next year, the children who were first enrolled at the One Love Junior School will be preparing to graduate from P7, the final class of primary school curriculum in Uganda. Many of them aspire to continue their education. In order to do this, the project will need work with members to generate the necessary sponsorship funds that can support many, if not all of the students as they enter further education.
We aim to provide essential care and an education for children who are severely impoverished. So many of them have grown to love learning, and find joy in dreaming of a better future. We hope to provide children with the means of being self-sufficient, even if they do not pursue further education. We will provide the necessary training so children can gain trade skills that allow them to be instantly employable or perhaps start their own business. We will support the development of the local economy too in Kabale by recognising the long-term support that these children will need.
We can assure you that every penny will go to furthering the One Love Project and the suggested improvements are only a few on our overall list. We hope to welcome you, your friends, and family in the near future.
