Story

After doing some local research to where I live in Nottinghamshire UK. I have found out that the area was heavily used by the 82nd Airborne Division during their time in the UK prior to the Normandy invasion. One particular area around the village of Owthorpe was utilised as a practice Drop Zone. Either side of this picture postcard English village was two DZs, DZ 'X' and DZ 'Y'. In April and March 1944 these DZs and the surrounding area saw a number of training jumps and field maneuver excerises. The paratroopers would jump, occupy the area and under go mock attacks and field problems. Units of both the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment and the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment would take part. Sadly during two separate excerises two young paratroopers were killed when their Parachutes failed to open a Jake T Quisenberry 507th and Thomas McGinley 508th. The memorial is in remembrance of these two men and the key part the local area played in the building up to the Normandy invasion. The action which turned the tide of WW2 and the freedom of Europe. In mid April 2024 to mark the 80th Anniversary of one of these excerises and the death of Thomas McGinley the fore mentioned memorial will be unveiled with full military honours by both British and US military personnel and local dignities. Please support is project in any way you can. Like and share Facebook posts. Tell friends and love ones! If you can spare any funds they would be grateful received. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Airborne All the Way!
