Story
In Cyprus there are more cats than people, with many of them living on the streets of the island. Cats are rarely seen as pets by local people and many go uncared for. It‘s also common that cats are abused. The neutering programme provided by the government is hard to access and isn’t fit for purpose. However, we know that TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) saves lives and reduces the amount of suffering that is seen daily in Cyprus. There are so many unnecessary litters of kittens born, who go on to suffer diseases, which can be fatal. Many survive, but only with intervention of rescuers saving them and paying for treatment. Unfortunately, many encounter damage or loss of their vision or eye/eyes altogether.
Cats that also go unneutered will encounter issues themselves. Male cats will fight, become injured and even encounter FIV. They will travel long distances to find females in heat.
Females that are not spayed can get pregnant as young as 4 months old. Kittens having kittens, with multiple litters a year. Cats giving birth on the street can find themselves with potentially fatal infections, the inability to feed their young and can also reject them.
Without TNR, the vicious circle will continue and spiral out of control, even further than it already is.
Please help us to help them and donate to our TNR specific fundraising programme.
In many regions, discounted neutering vouchers are available and/or vets can give special prices for the procedure.
Pictured is Tigger and Hope, 2 kittens found suffering needlessly in the tourist resort of Protaras. They were found filthy, eating out of bins and without their mother. Most likely dumped in that area, alone and scared. Luckily, their rescuer is adopting them.
