Hello friends, thank you for accepting my invitation. Poppy belongs to my friends Catherine and Billy and a few weekends ago the shocking discovery was made that Poppy has heart failure.
Poppy is not an old dog, in fact she is just 11 months old. As a puppy she, her mother and siblings were rescued from an empty swimming pool in Spain. Poppy was adopted and came to live here in Dundee, Scotland.
After emergency weekend vets treatment to save her life and stablilize her condition Poppy had a scan and was diagnosed with PDA. Patent ductus arteriosus is a birth defect in the heart. The ductus arteriosus is an important blood vessel that ensures that blood does not go to the lungs unnecessarily before birth. During the first few hours after birth, this blood vessel naturally closes off so blood can travel through the lungs for oxygenation. In Poppy's case it is still open. Surgeons tried using a coil to close it but the hole was too big. The only chance of saving Poppy's life was to undergo open heart surgery to close it. Poppy survived the surgery and is home recovering building up her strength. She will always require heart medication and surgery was very expensive but after surviving her bad start in life I do not think any animal lover would say she hadn't earned another chance at life.
