Story

🆕️ The countdown is on.

In 4 months on 28 January 2025 , Public Hearts will be funding another Cardiac Screening day 🆕️

To celebrate five years of its not-for-profit community work, Public Hearts announced Phase 2. Started in 2024, Public Hearts Defibrillator Campaign is opening a Community Cardiac Screening program with Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Each week in the UK, 12 young people age between 14 and 35 die from sudden cardiac arrest. On 28 JAN 2025, with Cardiac Risk in the Young up to 100 young people will have an ECG to detect potential heart conditions.

Currently there is no automatic framework to offer cardiac screening in the UK, unless there has been a young sudden cardiac death in the family under the age of 35. The immediate family can then be screened on the NHS. This can be a long wait, extending the length of timely diagnosis and prolonging the uncertainty and for individuals and their family.

Our first heart screening date was 25 April 2024 9-4pm at The Schoolhouse Café where 101 young people (14-35) from the local community and residents of St Paul’s came to be screened. It was a great success and we are already looking forward to our next date in 2025!

Facilitating community cardiac screening actively promotes getting to the heart of the community, facilitating access for all and life-changing and lifesaving information that could improve the health and lives of individuals, families, neighbourhoods and the potential of future community health services. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) affects 1 in every 250 people worldwide so its impact is far reaching, and close to home.

It's as easy as ECG - and it could be life changing and lifesaving.

We did it! On Thursday 25 April at The Schoolhouse Cafe in St Paul's Cheltenham, Public Hearts Heart Screening Day made a great start thanks to Cardiac Risk in the Young, screening 101 PEOPLE 14-35 IN 1 DAY. Everyone who signed up aged 14-35 had their heart screened by a 12 lead ECG with a CRY ECG Physiologist and their results read confidentially by a Cardiac Risk in the Young consultant cardiologist. They also received a Public Hearts gift bag with vital CRY heart and Public Hearts defib information.
