Story
The Red Box Project - how it works
In most schools there are a few young women who lack access to sanitary protection. The result? Anxiety, embarrassment, missed lessons, missed education.
This should be a straightforward problem to solve. So here is what we've done.....
We sponsor and stock a red box filled with sanitary towels, tampons and spare pants. The box is kept in school at Reception, with the Nurse, Student Services or with an appropriate member of staff.
Posters placed in the girls' toilets encourage a young woman in need of sanitary items to ask for the red box and take what she needs. Plain bags are included for discretion. If she needs supplies for her whole period, we've got her back.
No tearful panics in the loo. No wadded up toilet roll. No sitting awkwardly on one cheek. No anxious embarrassment. No missed lessons or staying home.
This is a simple project and is entirely funded by community kindness, woman to young woman.
Let's be clear. We ❤️ our teachers and support staff and we recognise that they go the extra mile every day. We also think that as communities around our schools, we should step up and do our bit.
Funding is needed to replenish the stocks in the boxes and to support new boxes in the community

Great idea. Directed here by Yasmine who asked for donations for this rather than presents/alcohol.

What an original and practical way to help girls get their education! Wish you all the best with it - I am so surprised that there is a need for this in the UK, but great that you are addressing it.

To date the Red Box Project has boxes in Vickerstown, Greengate Junior, Walney and St Pius Schools. With your help we aim to put more boxes of free Sanitary Products into schools in Barrow to help young ladies through their period x
