Story
The Refugee Language Initiative is a non-profit organisation that uses qualified teachers to bring English language skills to refugees and internally displaced people living in or near to camps and conflict zones throughout Europe. Our main aim is to provide education and employability to those who are most in need, as well as offering hope and ambition through the learning and improving of new skills.
Starting a new life in a new country after escaping the traumas of war is complicated enough, without adding language barrier problems. Our staff are able to teach any age and ability; from young children who have received no formal schooling, to those with advanced capabilities in English as a second language who would like to improve on their literacy or conversational skills. Each volunteer teacher works with a teaching assistant to ensure that all lessons are tailored to the individual learners and The Refugee Language Initiative works in constant communication with larger NGOs and non-profit organisations to ensure that our teachers are placed where their services are most beneficial. Through learning English as a second language, we give refugees the opportunity to communicate and integrate with a wider community, achieve their career and educational goals and, hopefully, find their feet in a new environment with a little more ease.
Although our teachers volunteer their time and expertise for free, the initiative arranges budget accommodation, local travel expenses and educational resources. This is why we need constant financial support. The Refugee Language Initiative will be in Athens, Greece throughout October and would very much like to fund an additional group of volunteers to work in Northern Greece at the same time. Refugees are keen to learn. We are keen to teach. Please help us make this happen.
