Weʼve raised £1,665 to support two lesser known charities - Hypopara UK and Say Aphasia. Both help improve the lives of many people and both are fantastic causes.

    Story

Paul Chapman and Steve Compton ('Rusty Nuts') have decided to join the 17 day, Rust 2 Sahara rally, jointly coaxing a 20 year old, 200k mile Volvo 3,500 miles (across some pretty rough terrain!) from Edinburgh to Morocco and, hopefully, back again. We'll be heading north to Edinburgh to meet the rest of the team on (appropriately) April Fools Day. We are looking to justify our stupidity by seeking donations for for two little known charities which support those suffering from Hypoparathyroidism (HPTH) and Aphasia.

    Hypopara UK (www.hypopara.org.uk)
Steve's wife Jane suffers from HPTH which is a rare endocrine condition in which the reduction or absence of parathyroid hormone leads to serious fatigue, muscle weakness, cramping and cognitive impairment. Parathyroid hormone (PTH)is essential for the regulation of calcium levels in the blood, and fluctuations in these calcium levels causes challenging symptoms on a daily basis.
Jane, a trained nurse, has been an active member of Hypopara UK since her diagnosis assisting the organisation and representing Hypopara.uk at conferences.

    Say Aphasia (www.sayaphasia.org)
Following a stroke in May 2013 at the age of 50, Colin Lyall, a long time friend of Paul from the construction industry, developed Aphasia. Aphasia is an impairment of language caused by an injury to the brain and most commonly resulting from a stroke. Following his affliction with this, Colin set up the charity Say Aphasia.
Colin is now helping many in the Brighton area and beyond, both through the organisation of the charity itself and through his own fundraising activities.

We believe that these are very special individuals and that the charities they actively support deserve all the help they can get.

Please help us to help these worthy causes.

Update continued... Having just crossed the Millau Bridge, we are beginning to feel confident... Probably about 1000 miles left for us to reach home via Newcastle, but those miles should be significantly less demanding than the previous ones! Thanks again to all you kind people who have contributed to these two fabulous and worthwhile charities - the money will really be appreciated. Steve, Paul, Bernie, Bully and Humphrey.

Well folks, Bernie is still going well albeit a little grubbier! 3400 miles into the trip, sand dunes, treacherous mountain passes and serious off-roading have failed to quench his thirst for adventure or his determination to return us home. Despite a previously bodged repair (by others) causing the steering to fail, a clash with a speeding artic disposing of one of our wing mirrors and a puncture necessitating a wheel change on the edge of a mountain at 9000ft, nothing has phased our Bernie! TBC.... .

Thanks everyone from Steve Compton and I (and our charities - Hypopara UK and Say Aphasia) for the fantastic donations. The money will mean a great deal to these causes. Having completed the final preparations including painting wheels and tyres, wing mirrors and "go faster stripes" we are now set to depart. I suppose the only concern now is whether the mechanical elements are up to the standard of the aesthetics! We have only requested donations through Facebook so please share it with anyone who knows us! Thanks!!
