Story
My name is Saajan Patel, I was born with a condition called Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, which weakens the muscles over time and I am confined to a wheelchair. In my younger years I loved playing/watching football and especially my beloved Man Utd. However, when I was approaching my tenth birthday, I was struggling to find the same power and strength that I used when I was younger. This is when I discovered I had this muscular disability. Of course, this was a very bitter pill to swallow, especially when you are only 10 years old. However, after the initial realisation and with the support of my family, I realised that I would not let this condition dictate my life, anymore than it already had. I continued to participate in watching football and never lost my appetite for this sport. After messing around in the wheelchair at home and participating to some level with my brother and sisters, I became more and more interested to understand what organisations there were for like-minded people with similar conditions to my own. I was fortunate to discover there was an organisation, who were trying to get a few wheelchair bound people together to enjoy some football related activity in Smithills sports centre. As my parents could see how engaged and motivated I was in this sport, they helped to get this initiative off the ground and formed the ‘Bolton Bullets’. In the early stages we were well behind the standard of established teams, but this only motivated us, as I was involved in a real determined group of young men, who had formed a real camaraderie together and really took pride in the jersey they were wearing. we progressed over many years my proudest moment when I received the captains armband, and also receiving a phone call from the National team manager to join England in training. I believe i can make the England first team but require the more superior equipment to reach my ambition and that's why I am fundraising for that dream to come true. Thanks
