    Story

Shelter Children's home is based in Ngong, Kenya; approximately one hour away from the capital, Nairobi. The home looks after around 200 kids with ages ranging from 2 to 22. Often orphaned as the result of the AIDS epidemic, these children have had to endure abandonment, neglect and abuse. Without the sanctuary of Shelter Children’s home, they would be left entirely to fend for themselves.

Kristina first volunteered at the home in 2008, and then want back to visit in 2012. With few opportunities for adoption, many of the same children from her first trip were there to greet her four years later. For the children at Shelter, this may be the only home they will ever know.

In October last year, a fire ravaged the home and destroyed much of the boys' living accommodation. Luckily no one was hurt, but since then the children have been forced to live in a nearby classroom. Whilst this is accommodation of some sorts, it is a far cry from a long-term solution. Fundraising efforts so far have managed to raise €9,000 but more help is urgently needed so rebuilding work can start.

In addition to repairing the dormitory, funds raised would go towards the vegetable garden and farm at the home so that food crops can continue to be grown. The farm helps provide food for the children and the remainder of the produce is then sold in town. Your contribution would help to make it a self-sustaining mission.

The Shelter home is an incredibly important project: it provides a nurturing and caring environment to the most vulnerable children who have nowhere else to go. The money donated will go towards providing essential living quarters at the home. And by contributing towards the farm, it represents a long-term investment that would ensure that this vital refuge can continue its work into the future. Your donation can make a big impact.
