Story
Three folk who should know better - Dave, Miriam and Martyna - are cycling 630km/390 miles in an effort to help give a kid an education.
A few years ago now Dave had just been laid off. A good friend got in touch with a volunteer teaching opportunity in a school far from any tourist beach in Thailand. He went out to the middle of nowhere, in the 'rice paddy of Thailand', and did 8 months of teaching. Kids travel up to 30 miles each day to attend the school, on top of them helping their parents tap rubber, plant or harvest rice, or sell food to make ends meet.
The school subsidises the kids who cannot afford to pay for a schooling, using money generated through fee-paying kids and donations. It does also receive a a tiny amount of funding from the Thai government. We are hoping to help the school give another kid a chance.
On Friday February 17th we will depart from St. John's International School (Bangkok) and cycle to St John's Tha Bom, around 630km (390 miles), in the hope that we can raise both a small amount of money, and awareness of volunteering for the school in Loei. We are aiming to do this in 5 days, carrying all our equipment with us.

7 years agoIt just keeps on coming. All those who have donated so far, thank you. If my geeksheet on Excel is right, we're looking at a touch over 37000B/835GBP either donated or pledged. Words fail me, beyond thank you. So many thanks. To paraphrase... the best thanks. The best.

7 years agoWell. The response has been nothing short of spectacular! For all those who have donated, thank you. Really, a huge, heartfelt thank you. We have two streams of sponsorship - UK and Thai. The UK currently stands at 287GBP. Thai-based donations stand at 13900. In total, this is approximately 26500 Thai Baht, far more than our target, and genuinely far more than I thought possible in such a short space of time (pretty much one day since this went 'live'). It would be sensational to break 30k. Thank you.

7 years agoThere are two streams of fundraising happening for this ride. This page is largely for UK based sponsorship. There is also a Thai stream (mostly cash and paper based). I will aim to update daily the COMBINED amount, so everyone knows really how we are doing. So far we are looking at around 7720THB / 175GBP

All the best Dave. Tokyo (2020) wouldn't be too far for you and all the UK Cycling funding's being withdrawn here due to all our athletes being bent - so maybe worth aiming for? Great cause. Good luck
