Weʼve raised £11,461 to start the UK's 1st LGBTIQ+ CRISIS HOMELESS SHELTER Colleagues, friends & activists creating a free, independent, grassroots project

Funded on Thursday, 19th October 2017

    Story

We have reached the £8k target to buy Status Quo's first tour bus to use as a crisis, homeless winter shelter for the LGBTIQ+ community here in London! It has 12 bunks & all the facilities needed for a comfortable stay whilst we work to support guests to safety. We are continuing to fundraise for the initial start up costs of the project eg: first aid kits, training, laundry & kitchen appliances & the endless amount of socks & shower gel we will need.

    Why are we LGBTIQ+ specific?
Our community are at a higher risk of domestic violence, abuse by family, sexual violence, drug & alcohol addiction, mental illness, self harming, poverty, discrimination at home & work, hate crimes & 1/4 of all homeless youth identify as LGBTIQ+ (there has been no data collected for 25+)

We are less likely to seek support from ‘mainstream’ services due to the ongoing prejudice & stigma we face.
The question isn’t why do we need an LGBTIQ+ shelter – the question is why don’t we already have one?

Thats what we asked ourselves, & during the closure of the winter shelters 2016/17 we started to develop this grassroots, independent project.

    Who are we?
We are LGBTIQ+ colleagues, friends & activists who work in the Homeless sector & have lived experience of homelessness & the complex issues our community face.

    When will it open?
We are planning to open for winter 2017. Our goal is to be open year round depending on on-going support & funding.

What can I do to help?
Funding: Please donate as much as you can towards the project.
If you are planning an event/marathon etc & would like to make us the beneficiary please get in touch so we can promote you.
If you are interested in making a pledge to buy advertising space on the side/back of the bus to support us with funding, please contact carla.ecola@LGBTQoutside.org
