    Story

Since the beginning of the military conflict in eastern Ukraine and Russia's annexation of Crimea in March 2014, an estimated 1.7 million people have been internally displaced. Many have fled to cities such as Kyiv, Odessa and Lviv in search of refuge and assistance. 'The Way Home' Foundation is an Odessa-based charity which provides aid to families affected by the trauma of war and displacement. They help adults find employment and assist their children to get back into education.

On 11th April, I will set out with Sergo Khalatyan on an 8-day cycle from Constanta on the Romanian Black Sea Coast to Odessa in Ukraine. Covering 600km, our journey will take us along the Danube Delta and briefly through southern Moldova before arriving in Odessa where we will meet for the first time the families affected by the recent conflict.

We hope that this trip will be the beginning of a lasting relationship with 'The Way Home' Foundation. They rely on donations from abroad to assist them with their rehabilitation programmes, and Sergo and I will be very grateful for your support.

    Thank you!

Day 1: Constanta to Mihai Viteazu, 55 km, 4 hours Today's journey was plain sailing, with long, steady inclines giving way to extended stretches of free-wheeling. Fields of long grass flanked us on both sides, a cool breeze coming off the Black Sea and propelling us northwards. With the exception of a momentarily hairy situation with a large dog as we arrived in Istria (I seem to be a magnet for them when cycling), we reached Mihai Viteazu with no major injuries, a heathy glow from the unbroken sunshine and an almighty appetite.
