Story
In 2023 a pair of ospreys built a magnificent nest at the top of an oak tree on Gilestone Farm, on the outskirts of Talybont on Usk. This is the first pair to successfully build a nest this far south in Wales for hundreds of years. The birds returned to the nest in spring 2024 building up the nest, increasing their pair bond but failed to breed in 2024. The same pair returned in April 2025 and have bred successfully - they topped up the nest, mated, laid three eggs with a single chick hatching from those on 2nd June 2025. It is expected to make its first flight in late-July and is expected to depart on migration at about the same time as the male parent in late-August.
Usk Valley Ospreys aims to make sure the ospreys are properly protected and to give the birds the best possible chance of thriving in their new home. Usk Valley Ospreys is working closely with the landowner, farmer and local community to conserve and protect the birds and to promote understanding and enjoyment through publishing a live video feed from the nest.
Usk Valley Ospreys is a formally constituted group and is a charity.
